Building a Home in Kenya — The Roofing Stage Explained
For many Kenyans, building a home is a lifelong dream. The roofing stage is one of the most exciting milestones — but also one where costly mistakes are commonly made. Here is what you need to know before you get to that stage.
Step 1: Complete the Wall Plate Before any roofing begins, your structural engineer must confirm that the wall plate — the horizontal timber or steel beam on top of the walls — is correctly levelled and anchored. This is the foundation of your entire roof structure.
Step 2: Erect the Trusses Whether you are using timber or Light Gauge Steel trusses, they must be installed according to the structural drawings. Spacing, pitch, and bracing must all be done correctly to ensure stability.
Step 3: Install Purlins Purlins are horizontal members fixed across the trusses to support the roofing sheets. Their spacing depends on the gauge and profile of the mabati being used.
Step 4: Lay the Roofing Sheets Sheets are fixed from the bottom up, overlapping correctly to prevent water ingress. Fixings must be properly sealed to avoid leaks.
Step 5: Install Gutters and Downpipes Once the sheets are in place, gutters are fitted along the eaves and connected to downpipes that direct water to drains or storage tanks.
Step 6: Insulation and Ceiling Finally, insulation is laid and the ceiling installed, completing your roof system from top to bottom.
Each step matters. Skipping or rushing any stage can lead to leaks, structural failure, and expensive remedial work.
